Airtel And Reliance Slashes Roaming Charges

Indian mobile service providers Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications have both announced their reduced roaming tariffs.

These two companies have also announced the scrapped rental rates for roaming services. These announcements are to meet the recently released guidelines issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India last month.

Bharti Airtel said that they have now slashed roaming charges by 56%. They have also now waived off the roaming rental of Rs 49 per month.

In addition, their local calls while roaming will be charged at Rs 1.40 per minute. STD calls would be charged at a fixed 2.40 per minute. Incoming calls on roaming would cost Rs 1.75 per minute.

Sanjay Kapoor, joint president (mobile services), Bharti Airtel added on these new announcements: “We now usher in an era of simplified roaming tariffs wherein all Airtel mobile users will benefit from our seamless network and have the opportunity to make calls while traveling anywhere in India.”

Reliance on the other hand has announced that they are reducing their roaming charges by up to 44% on its pre-paid connections. They have not been charging any roaming fees from their customers.

Airtel Broadband Is Getting Better
For some reason i thought of using Airtel's Broadband again. I don't know why but i again started believing that it may provide better services this time around, than what they did before.
I think this time around i am very much satisfied Airtel Broadband.

256 Kbps for an Unlimited connection at 999 INR is not a bad deal considering the fact that now their connection quality is much constant, consistent and better. What else do you need?

Well, state of art customer care helpline. I was impressed by the way their agents help you out. Nice to talk to. And eager to solve your problem at the earliest.
Wow, is that really Airtel :)

Well Done!

AirTel Sales Person's Promise
I wanted a broadband at home in Pune and I was approached by AirTel Sales person (some Dhirendra). I specifically asked him if I get a static IP or not. He was unable to answer this (as well as many of my other questions) and hence contacted his superior (Ashvin Soni). I talked to Mr.Soni and he promised that I will be given a static IP. Finally I decided to go for it.

To my surprise when the technician came to install, he said that AirTel doesn’t provide static IP to residential customers and I am promosed something that is out of AirTel policy and I will have to live with a dynamic IP.

I have now asked them to disconnect the broadband.

I am surprise to see this kind of practice in a company like AirTel. Sales people promise anything to achieve their target! I am trying to contact the sales person Dhirendra but he is not picking up his phone :-). What a professional attitude.

Mr. Mittal are you reading this!!!!!

Airtel Broadband @ 128kbps
Department of Telecom & Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(Trai) has already informed ALL Broadband Service Provider that the Minimum Speed should be 256 kbps to be Called as ’’BROADBAND’’ but Airtel still is providing connection @ 128 kbps & call it BroadBand.

BSNL Dataone starts at 256 kbps but I am not sure How the Speed is.

Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, Hon’ble Minister for Communications and Information Technology has done LOT to Bring BROADBAND to all Major Cities

Airtel Service is Faster as they are PRIVATE Players.

AIRTEL 128 kbps is not 128kbps it is sLOWER than they tell.

Airtel Gives 128 kbps @ 600.00 per Month for Unlimited usage , so the price is good & if anyone needs Modem 99 per month as Modem Rent will be Charged Extra.

Airtel’s only Problem is they Call to Subscribers ’’AUTOMATED CALL’’ during any Time of Day or Night for Subscribing to there ’’HELLo Tunes Service’’ & which I call JUNK CALL service.

Airtel should note that if any one wants this hellO Tunes they will call & subscribe why you call to them & create SPAM JUNK CALL SERVICE.

Bharti to launch services in Jersey
Bharti has won an important license which would enable them to provide comprehensive telecom services, including cellular and international long distance (ILD), in Jersey located in British Isles.
Jersey as a result becomes the second foreign destination where Bharti would be providing their services. They are already functioning in Seychelles, where Bharti entered in 1998.
The license was won by Jersey Telenet, a subsidiary of Bharti Global which itself is an offshore investment company of Bharti Group.
This unit would be investing close to around £20 million in setting up networks and the services are expected to be operational later this year.
Bharti would be using technology provided by Nokia and IBM for networks and other IT solutions respectively.
Bharti Enterprises CMD Sunil Mittal: said in a statement on this news event: “Having spearheaded the growth of telecom sector in India, Bharti is committed to providing world-class telecom services now in Jersey. The acquisition of telecom license in Jersey will be a springboard for other opportunities that may be present globally.”

Bharti looking at expansion through acquisitions
Bharti Airtel has said that they are now aiming at expanding their business operations and acquisitions might be one of the ways to go ahead with their plans.
Sunil Mittal, chairman of new Bharti Airtel spoke about their plans: “We’re ready to go outside India. We have the strength and the resilience. There’ll be the right moment, where we’ll strike.”
Bharti is aiming to expand in markets where the telecom density is low so that they get a base of prospective customers. Vodafone is one of investors in the company and they are supporting their plans to expand into other markets around the world.
The company wants to invest in neighboring markets like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the near future. In addition, Bharti is also aiming to acquire licenses in certain African nations, which experts believe would fuel the growth in the mobile market in the future.

A complaint from a customer of touchtel
Below is a complaint from a customer i found some where on the internet.

To Date : 18-Mar-2005

The Commercial Officer,

Touchtel India,

Haryana

Sub: DISSAPPOINTED WITH TOUCHTEL / AIRTEL SERVICES [ PH : 0129-5040718 ]

I'M SERIOUSLY REGRETTING MY DECISION TO SWITCH TO TOUCHTEL. I am having a VERY bad experience with Touchtel after getting DSL service. I am really amazed at the customer service of such a big association. I think that touchtel is not capable of handling too many customers.

In spite of my repeated request emails, letters, phone calls to Touchtel India, Haryana, for discontinuation of the DSL connection, Landline phone, refund cheque. I’m sad to inform you that no action has been taken till now and still i am receiving the bills.

I have been complaining ever since the first week of June 2004, but no action has been taken. Every time I call the customer care, I am allotted a complaint number & am promised that I should receive a call with a solution within 24 hours. But no response. The behavior of the touchtel employees is very RUDE.

PROBLEM : DISCONTINUATION OF DSL CONNECTION / LANDLINE PHONE

1. I took DSL connection in the month of March-04 I used it for 2 months and I submitted all the bills for that. In the first week of June-2004 i gave request for discontinuation of DSL connection through email, written application, via phone. Till December 2004 I received DSL bill included in my landline bill.

2. Gave request for Discontinuation of Landline on 20-Dec-2004 but till date no calls received from touchtel and not received my refund cheque yet.

Request Type
Month
According to Touchtel max time to solve the Problem
Status

Discontinuation of DSL
June-2004
Different employees of touchtel gives different statements:

Customer Care = 15 Days

Sector-16 Faridabad = 2 Months
Still Pending and got DSL charges included in bill till December, 2004.

Discontinuation of Landline
20-Dec-2004
Customer Care = 15 Days

Sector-16 Faridabad = 1 Month

Sector-12 Faridabad = 15 Days
Still receiving bills and not getting the status of my application.

Communication History

1. I called up touchtel customer care for getting the information regarding the DSL disconnection. Customer care executive told me to write email from my touchtelindia account.

2. I sent emails from my sidhartha@touchtelindia.com account on 15-June-2004 the reference no for that email I got from customer care is FR-71122. On 21-june-2004 received the acknowledgement for the mail saying the request has been forwarded to the concerned department for the needful action.

3. I went to sector-16 office faridabad to get the progress of my application. The executive present over there told me that no emails had been received and ask me to send again email.

4. I again sent email from my sidhartha@touchtelindia.com account on 05-July-2004. I again received the acknowledgement mail.

5. I again went to sector-16 office faridabad to get the progress of my application. The executive (Priyanka Dhingra) present over there told me that no emails had been received. I showed her the printouts of the mails, reference no but she told me that until and unless I will not give application in written no action will be taken.

6. On 17-July-2004 i gave Priyanka Dhingra the written application, photo copies of the email sent to careharyana@touchtelindia.com. She told me that with in 2 Months my problem will be solved.

7. In between 2-3 times I received call from recovery department regarding DSL modem, CD etc and I told every time the person who called up to collect all the things from my home. Every time they said that they will collect the things from my home but nobody came till December.

8. After that till December 2004 I received the DSL bill included in my phone bill. Every month I went to sector-16 for correction of bill. Every time I told Priyanka Dhingra about this problem but no action had been taken care.

9. In December 2004 I again received the bill showing DSL charges. On 19-Dec-2004 I again went to sector-16 office faridabad regarding the correction of bill. Then again I ask this problem to Priyanka Dhingra and she told me that there is a BUG IN TOUCHTEL SOFTWARE because of which the customers received the DSL charges included in their bills. Than I told her that she told me that my problem will be solved in 2 months. Than very rudely she said to me that if there is BUG in software than what can I do.

I was very much disappointed with her words / rude behavior and I decided to disconnect my landline too. I asked about this so very rudely she said give an application in written.

10. Next day on 20-Dec-2004 my wife went to Sector-16 office. She gave the written application to Priyanka Dhingra handed over the Telephone Instrument, DSL Modem, USB Cable, CD, Splitter, Connector, cable etc. Priyanka Dhingra received the application but refused to stamp on it. She told that within 1 month the problem will be solved and we’ll get the refund cheque.

11. Again on 21-Dec-04 i talked to customer care exec on phone regarding dissconnection of DSL/Landline and the executive again did not give me any satisfactory answer. Again i got reference no FC-12256200 for that.

12. Again on 29-Jan-2005 i went to touchtel Sector-12 Office. I showed all the documents, email photo copies, applications etc to Mansi. Then she checked the record and told me that they did not receive any applications regarding cancellation of landline phone and she told me to again give a written application. I refused to write application again and told her to settle my account ASAP otherwise I will complaint to higher authorities. Then she promised me to settle all my dues within 15 days.

13. Again on 17-Mar-2005 I called up customer care regarding the status. I talked to Ajay but he did not give me any information regarding the progress of my application.

Now I am very much frustrated and disappointed with touchtel employee’s behavior and services. I am having all the records / proofs / reference no’s of applications sent to touchtel and now i am going to Consumer Forum.

Thanking You

Sidhartha

Airtel launches NetXpert facility for their broadband users
Airtel launches NetXpert facility for their broadband users

Airtel has launched an advanced automated broadband care application called Airtel NetXpert for their broadband users. This troubleshooting application would be provided for free to their customers to help them experience a trouble free broadband experience.

Airtel NetXpert application would essentially come in a CD and consists of three main modules. These modules are Airtel NetXpert Installer, Airtel NetXpert Agent, and Airtel NetXpert Chat. Users would be able to use this application to ensure speedy installation and activation of broadband connection on their machines.

The application would also be capable of diagnosing both the user’s system and the Airtel network. The aim is to reduce the dependency of the user on Airtel technicians to analyze and solve problems at the user’s end by using software applications.

Users would also be able to use Airtel NetXpert Chat service to interact with Airtel customer care executives to respond to questions or issues in real time. Prem Pradeep, CEO, Airtel broadband and telephone services, Karnataka said in a statement on this new initiative from the company: “With Airtel NetXpert, we have once again raised the bar for broadband service in India by offering innovative, new customized service automation solutions to help enhance the Airtel Broadband customer experience.”

We just hope that this new service from the company does not end up causing more problems for the user as Sify Broadband did when they launched the SecureSynergy application for their customers.

Sucky Airtel Broadband
I have been on Airtel Broadband ever since I moved to Gurgaon in December 2004. It has been a good experience on Airtel. Especially when I compare it to Sify Broadband. However, the last month has been a revelation.

The company announced double speeds at night scheme. However, when I check it at my place, I find it hard to believe if that actually is happening at my place. The best I get during the daytime is around 17 KBps when I should be getting around 32 KBps. At night, the speed improves to around 25 KBps when I should technically be getting 64 KBps.

A little loss in delivery of the speed is acceptable to me. But less than half of the speeds, I should be getting? Not good. Maybe I should start Blogging on my ongoing experiences with Airtel Broadband as I did it with Sify. Or maybe I should just harass the customer care people who have the usual suggestions… Scan for viruses/worms, clean cache, restart, reinstall. What crap?

I do not need their crappy online bandwidth tester when I can see what speeds I am getting on my download manager. And I do not need to listen to stupid comments that maybe my PC is infected with a worm, which is eating all my bandwidth. I am a smart enough guy to know that speeds suck from their side and they are doing nothing about it.

Maybe instead of spending money on keeping Shah Rukh Khan advertising for them, they can invest more in keeping their existing customers happy. Instead, I get spam calls on my Airtel telephone in the middle of the night telling me about their new caller tunes feature which would enable me to let the people calling me listen to the latest Emraan Hashmi starrer movie’s song.

Why Airtel Broadband is Good Value for Money
I have my own reasons to be angry with Airtel Broadband. They overcharged me, don’t give me double speeds at night. Speeds can be real bad at times. But, one of the user at the India Broadband Forum collected some good points with the service. Here they are!In a moment of clarity (fuelled by alcohol), i felt i figured out this whole Airtel jhanjhat.
Airtel is actually being more honest than we give them credit for, by trying to give us, in a way, what has been promised.
Stay with me on this…
I have a 128 connection… hence, IDEALLY, i should be getting 16kb/s. but i don’t. i’m getting 10-11kb/s these days. sad, but true.
But here’s the good part.
They’ve promised (me, via a specially delivered letter) double speeds at night. and, lo and behold, i’m getting 20-22kb/s around 11pm. <-- don't know till when, since i don't stay up till 4 or 5am. but even a few hours of such a dose is good.
Let’s celebrate.
Celebrate "the consumer"'s complete inability to talk sense to the flowchart cramming duffers who form the first level of tech support. and to the "senior tech people", who come on the phone five minutes after you're put on hold. who stonewall and ask for money. (it's a long story.)
Celebrate the fact that airtel's customer care line is toll-free. ;-)
Celebrate the disgust at having to bribe the friendly neighborhood Airtel guy for a few pointless nuggets of information, by giving him directions to astalavista. (and copying/exchanging a few juicy items onto/from his company issued usb flash drive.)
Celebrate the shortsightedness of airtel management, which chooses crappy, in-house, phokat-ka-maal broadcom-labelled-as-beetel imports, disregarding the benefits of better CPE.
Celebrate the personal friendships (e.g. the wali connection) formed when our airtel accounts give us the finger.
Sigh.
Moral of the story: (i'd) be(tter be) careful at places and on times labeled "media night."
p.s. 10% is peanuts. customers do care when they're shafted by brain-dead little punks, who haughtily inform them that Airtel guarantees 64k, and baaki sab is bhagwan bharosay, in a tone that reeks of "and you wasted my precious call centre time to ask me this crap, without looking at the product brochure more carefully?"

Airtel Broadband throttling speeds of their users?
We now have some idea on why some users (including us at TechWhack) are noticing falling speeds on Airtel Broadband. The company is expanding their user base at such a speed that their backend is unable to meet up with the growing demand.
The company is offering free installation in the new areas they are expanding their operations at and had recently announced double speeds at night. All of these are taking its toll on their DSLAMs.
One user had this to report through a statement made by the service engineer who visited his house:
a. Airtel’s free installation offer has completely choked their dslams (?)
b. new cables are being laid, to keep up with demand.
c. the double speed offer at night worsens things.
d. “actually” there’s a lot of bandwidth available.
e. Airtel implements throttling. i.e. if you’re a big downloader, you’ll be cut down to size by being given less speeds. (By a policy, that monitors entire account categories/groups.)
These problems should be sorted out fast as the company is working on upgrading the capacity of their DSALMs.
